When a couple is considered subfertile?

A couple is considered subfertile when despite the effort for achievement of a pregnancy, this is not rendered possible after at least of one year unprotected intercourse. It is of great importance of course for the couple not to use contraceptive methods, and to live in place where the conditions are comfortable for intercourse. 

What it is the frequency of subfertile couples in the general population?

 It is calculated that in western countries 10 with 15% of couples cannot acquire a child without the help of science.  

What is the percentage of contribution of men's of factor in a subfertile pair?  

Roughly 20% of cases of subfertility are solely attributed to a male factor. In the 30 to 40% of cases the feminine and male factor are considered to be equally involved, rising thus the male factor to the total percentage of 50%.

What are the causes of male subfertility?  

The causes can be many, but they can be separated in three categories. 

a. The testicular dysfunction, which can be attributed to a toxic factor (fever in childhood, drugs etc), or to a Varicocele.  

b. The post testicular causes, such as Chronic Prostatitis, and the anatomic obstructions of spermatic ducts.  

c. The endocrine causes that are relatively infrequent.  

What it is the most frequent treatable cause of male subfertility? 

In the daily medical practice, we can say that Varicocele and Chronic Prostatitis are the most frequent and treatable causes of male subfertility.  

What is Varicocele?

Varicocele is the enlargement of veins of testicle especially on the left side, resulting in testicular dysfunction, and production of sperm of poor quality. The treatment Varicocele is the surgical, with a small surgical incision in lower abdomen the internal spermatic vain is ligated and the testicular function is restored in the majority of cases .

 

What it is the more important examination for the investigation of male subfertility?  

Without doubt spermodiagramm is the fundamental examination for the diagnosis of male subfertility. However it should always be combined with a proper physical examination, and patient’s history taking.

What are the usual forms of sperm dysfunction?

Oligospermia (where the number of sperms is smaller than usual), Asthenospermia (where is observed reduction of mobility of sperms), and finally Azoospermia (absence of spermatozoa from the semen).  

When a man is considered subfertile?

 There is not a cut off value in spermodiagramm parameters what can separate the men in fertile or not. Apart from the absolutely physiologic or pathological cases, the majority of the patients it is found between this two limits and in order to appreciate the degree of subfertility the caring urologist should consider and other factors as well.  

Are there any  treatment options fro male subfertility?

Thankfully there are many treatments for male infertility. The surgical treatment of Varicocele offers a substantial possibility of quality of sperm improvement, but even those that do not respond to this method of treatment, they can relay on the methods of assisted reproduction.
