A patient can suffer from constipation either as a
cause of Chronic Pelvic Pain or as an isolated and
frustrating
symptom.
Precise form of
definition for constipation does not exist,
but it involves a limitation of bowel movements,
and/or hard stool consistency.
In general,
constipation can present itself with one from the
following ways:
-
Decreased frequency of
bowel movements
-
Hard
stool consistency
-
Intense effort
during defecation
-
Feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation
-
Feeling
of abdominal bloating
The aforementioned symptoms lead usually to
additional problems, like:
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Feeling of
fatigue
-
Loss of appetite
-
Feeling of depression
There is a
proven relation between dysfunction of urogenital
system in men and women, and
constipation.
For a wide spectrum of diseases that cause Chronic
Pelvic Pain (ie
Urinary tract infection,
dysfunctional voiding,
neurogenic bladder
etc),
their symptoms can be created or
worsened from constipation.
For the diagnosis of constipation we use a detailed
history taking, but the etiology can become evident
with the use of specialized examinations.
Chronic Pelvic Pain Center allocates special
equipments, the use of
which can be helpful:
Anorectal Manometry,
with which we can measure the hydrostatic pressure
of the
rectum and to
test however the sphincteric activity permits a
smooth defecation.
Rectal sphincter electromyography can diagnose irregular electric
potentials of the sphincter during defecation
guiding as for the
diagnosis and treatment of constipation.
For the
treatment of constipation in
Chronic Pelvic Pain Center
we use behavioural modification techniques, correct
use of medication,
biofeedback, and in selected
cases surgical interventions.
For
treatment resistant cases we work in collaboration
with a
Gastroenterologist and a General Surgeon.
